Resaca Battlefield Preservation
| The Civil War Preservation Trust, a nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C., has purchased 565 acres to protect the location (in Resaca, Gordon County) of the first major battle of the Atlanta Campaign. A total of about 12,000 soldiers were killed in the battle, which occured on May 14-15, 1864, and the Confederate forces were forced to retreat--otherwise they would have been surrounded. The State of Georgia is currently working to convert the site into a state park.
